Can anyone explain how Hurricane Earl is expected to break down Fiona?

I've read differing statements. Some say that H Earl will cause Fiona to break down. Others say they will merge. Yet others say that there's never been two Atlantic TS or H of these strength merge. Then I look at the map, and it seems to me that Earl is still going strongly west, and it seems like Fiona would be holding Earl to continue in a westerly path. Can someone sort this out for me? I'm in Virginia biting my nails down to the nibs.
